How Chiropractic Works

Chiropractic care provides people an alternative to medications and surgery. Helping people feel great — have less discomfort, more energy, and a sense of control over their health and well-being -– is what Dr. Leigh Damkohler loves about being a massage therapist and chiropractor in Westchester. She strives to get people out of their pain patterns as quickly as possible and make them an active part of their care. Showing patients how to make small changes in their lives that can improve their overall quality of life is empowering for the patient and doctor.

“My first experience with chiropractic was after an auto accident. Several months later I realized that not only was my pain gone and my range of motion back, but I hadn’t been sick or on antibiotics since having had chiropractor adjustments on a regular basis. This added benefit was the tipping point in my choosing to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.” – Dr. Leigh Damkohler

How Chiropractic Works

The primary focus of chiropractic is to adjust the spine and remove those things which interfere with the body’s natural normal healing ability. Doctors of chiropractic offer holistic healthcare, which simply means that we are concerned with your entire health and well being. We work to better integrate your nervous system with your muscular-skeletal system, enabling you to function in peak form without the use of drugs or surgery. As with all chiropractors, Westchester, NY chiropractor Dr. Leigh Damkohler believes that your body heals from within, and that you are the ultimate authority regarding the needs of your body.

Spinal adjustments to correct subluxations are what make doctors of chiropractic unique in comparison with any other type of health care professional. The term “adjustment” refers to the specific force chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns.

The objective of the chiropractic adjustment is to reduce the subluxation, which results in an increased range of motion, reduced nerve irritability, reduced muscle spasm, reduced pain and improved function. The chiropractic adjustment is a quick thrust applied to a vertebra for the purpose of correcting its position, movement or both. Adjustments are often accompanied by an audible release of gas in the spinal joints that sounds like a “crack.” The sound sometimes surprises people the first time they get adjusted, but the sensation is usually relieving.

Chiropractic is so much more than simply a means of relieving pain. The goal of chiropractic care is to restore the body to its natural state of optimal health. This equates to greater energy and improved function of all your systems – musculoskeletal, nervous, immune, etc. Improved health and vitality is the natural consequence of chiropractic care. Who wouldn’t want that?
